The 1981 UEFA Cup Final was played over two legs, the second being played in front of 28,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium, Amsterdam.
Ipswich Town had won the first leg 3-0, so held a significant advantage. The first half saw five goals, with AZ Alkmaar leading 3-2 at the break, however Ipswich were still leading 5-3 on aggregate. Alkmaar scored again in the second half, and despite most of the action towards the end of the match taking place in the Ipswich penalty area, the English club held on to win the UEFA Cup 5–4 on aggregate!
